Day Trip To City of Orion

Our driver will pick you up from your accommodation and take you into the desert in a 4×4 off-road vehicle. Along the way, you will admire breathtaking desert landscapes and see nomad families living in traditional tents before arriving at one of Morocco’s most fascinating and lesser-known archaeological sites, created by the German artist Hannsjörg Voth.

First, we will visit Stairway to Heaven (1985–1987), a remarkable rammed-earth structure shaped like a right-angled triangle. The monument rises to a height of about 16 meters, and 52 steps lead to a platform located 4 meters below the tip of the structure.

Next, we will continue to the Golden Spiral (1994–1997), a spectacular spiral-shaped artwork built around a well measuring approximately 97 × 60 meters. Voth designed the ground plan using nine quarter-circles, creating a striking representation of mathematical harmony in the desert.

Afterward, we will visit the City of Orion (2000–2003), where seven large rammed-earth towers represent the seven main stars of the Orion constellation. Several smaller towers symbolize the less visible stars, and the position and dimensions of each structure correspond to the actual stars in the night sky.

We will then meet nomad families living near these archaeological sites and enjoy traditional Moroccan mint tea. In the late afternoon, we will stop in Fezna to explore the famous Khattarat of Fezna, an ancient underground irrigation system that carries groundwater across long distances using gravity alone. Finally, we will transfer you back to your accommodation
